THEIR LOSS...SUNWEST GAIN. Bad news USPV folds due to
the last minute withdrawal of a gigantic women sport sponsor.
But the great news is Chris Gonzalez who was originally
anticipated to join Sunwest in April will now be on board in
December. "To the extent there is no conflict with my U.S.
national team commitments, San Diego and Sunwest is my
home."
Coach Ozhan says-- "We could not be more fortunate
because Chris is enthusiastic about training the entire club's
setters and shaping the direction of the Sunwest program. To
have an international caliber trainer assume these responsibilities
is a remarkable opportunity."
Chris's prior experiences include serving as an assistant
coach for the Long
Beach State Women's Volleyball team for the
past five years, training the Cal Juniors
Volleyball Club 16 and 18 Elite programs,
and as an assistant with the USA Women's National Team Programs.

Gonzalez began his career
with Long Beach State University (LBSU) in 1997. During
his tenure "The Beach" participated
in four NCAA Final Fours, won three Big West Conference
Championships, and captured the 1998 NCAA
National Championship. This marked the
first time in NCAA history that a team finished their
season undefeated, LBSU finished the
season with a perfect 36-0 record. Chris also assisted in
the development of two NCAA Players of the
Year, eighteen Big West Conference
selections, eight NCAA All-Americans, and two USA National
Team members. |
While at Cal Juniors coach Gonzalez trained
fifteen U.S. Junior Olympic All-Americans
and seven Volleyball Magazine Fab "50" selections. In
addition fifty-six Cal Jrs. alum have
earned NCAA Division I Scholarships under his tutelage.
| Team Championships that were
earned under Gonzalez include the 1998 U.S. Junior
Olympic Club National Championship, the 1999 US Far
Western and SCVA 16 and under (Open
and Club) National Qualifier Championships, the 2001
Mikasa Kick-Off Classic Championships (18
and 16 and under), and the 2001 SCVA
Regional Championships (18 and 16 and under). This also
includes one gold, two silver, and
two bronze medals earned in United States Junior Olympic (USJO)
competition. Gonzalez 18 and under
squads have finished in the the top 10 nationally in each
of the past two seasons. |
 |
In 2001 and 2002 Chris assisted with both the USA Women's
National and National A2 Teams.
"I am very excited about the opportunity to work with
some of the most well-respected volleyball
educators in the country. I believe the coaches at Sunwest
and I share a similar passion and devotion to making
significant contributions to the evolution of volleyball."
