The Preps - 2001

KIM MCGIVEN verbally commits to Santa Clara.  After long and difficult decision, Kim described the college placement decision as more stressful than most people realize.  Wanting sports to be a part of your college experience adds another variable to an already complicated process.  Knowing what your goals are and who you can trust is difficult.  Before Kim found Santa Clara, she was courted by big time volleyball programs like Penn State, Santa Barbara, University of Arizona, and 1st ranked Long Beach State.  When asked about the opportunity to play at Long Beach State, Kim replied "It would have been an honor to play for Long Beach. Coaches such as Brian Gimmillaro, Debbie Green-Vargas and Chris Gonzalez are as sophisticated as it gets.  Ultimately it came down to finding the right fit.  Coach John Wallace has done an amazing job at Santa Clara and I can't wait to be a part of it.  I feel fortunate because I don't think John was looking for an outside hitter in my year.  Sometimes your ideal program does not need your type of player, even if they really like you.  As luck would have it something came up and I got the call.  I sympathize with anyone who goes through the process, it took a lot out of me."

ASHLEY DAVIDSON led Scripps Ranch to the finals of the Mira Mesa volleyball tournament.  Davidson, a setter by trade is playing middle blocker for her school in an effort to help her team be the best it can be.  In an interview with the Union-Tribune, Ashley said playing middle is a challenge, but luckily my sister Cameron (a Scripps sophomore middle blocker) has given me some tips.  Ashley's versatility has kept her team near the top of the ranking in one of the county's most competitive years.  Last week will mark the second time that Davidson was named to an All-Tournament team this year.  The 4.3 plus student entertained playing at USC, Florida State, Rice and Cornell before she decided to go to Columbia University.

In her third year of playing volleyball RACHEL JOHNSON has gotten to be a part of some big time high school competition.  The ballerina turned volleyball player can't seem to get enough.  Last month, Rachel's high school volleyball team, Torrey Pines registered two first place finishes in state wide tournaments.  The powerful Torrey Pines team has a strong argument for the number one rank in the state and is certainly the number one in the county.  Check this out...

11/15/01 - Check out rollshot.com's 2001 All- Interview Team!!!  Congrats to Rachel Johnson!!!

Team effort puts Bishop's volleyball to the finals of the October 27th Los Angeles Brentwood Tournament.  Bolstered by the stand out play of Katie Markstein, Chelsea Hensel and Megan Houseman; Remely Dodge and Jenny McReynolds received "All Tournament" recognition.
